Le nang ho! (Hello everyone!) We are a group of Year 3 students currently pursuing a Diploma in Chinese Media & Communication from Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Humanities and Social Sciences!
A warm welcome to kakinang.network, a platform for everyone to learn more about Teochew culture through food! Through the captivating content such as interviews and food tutorials we produce, we hope to spread the importance of Teochew cultural knowledge.
OUR PROJECT
The project name, “kakinang”, is derived from a common Teochew phrase, which literally means “our own people” as we hope to connect people, regardless of dialect groups, to come together to appreciate the beauty of Teochew culture. Hence, through our simple food tutorial videos online, we hope that our audience can have a better understanding of the Teochew culture and to also try making these dishes by themselves too.
This project covers 3 main areas:
-
Food preparation tutorials: Food tutorials will be filmed using the “flat-lay” style and we will also be using editing techniques such as timelapse. Instructions will be short and easily read. Through these elements, we hope to show our audience that cooking traditional dishes is not complicated.
-
Cultural aspects: Other than learning the food preparation process through the videos, our audience can also learn about cultural aspects through photo-essays and short video animations, passing on the cultural values.
-
Ingredients and nutritional content: Teach our followers on Instagram and Facebook the ingredients featured in our videos and the different nutrients it contains.
Our project will utilise a multimedia approach to promote and preserve the Teochew culture. Our multimedia platforms include the following:
-
Youtube
Our key deliverable where all food tutorials and animation series will be uploaded. Viewers can have easier access to our video content through YouTube.
-
Instagram:
Key social media platform to engage our primary audience with bite-sized information and Teochew customs. Through Instagram, we will lead our audience to our other social media platforms.
-
Facebook:
Used to publicise updates on the project and to reach out to bothe our primary and secondary audience. We are able to reply and view comments given by our followers through direct message and comments on Facebook.
-
Wix website:
A platform that features our content in great detail. Serves as an information data bank. All of our covered content will be uploaded to our WIX website.
OUR MISSION AND AIM
We want to keep the Teochew traditions alive through food. Food connects people, thus we want to raise the interest of Teochew culture in Youths and change their mindset that traditional dishes are “old-fashioned” and “complicated”. With the prevalence of new media, our connections with youths will be much stronger. In addition, moving visual will attract the attention of the audience and it educates them on the Teochew culture in an interactive manner.

Through this project, we aim to raise the Teochew awareness of Youths, to teach them the origins and significance behind the customs of the Teochew culture cross media platforms on social media. Most importantly, to preserve Teochew culture and customs through Teochew cuisine.
