As compared to cuisines of the other dialect groups, Teochew cuisine is well-loved by many Singaporeans. However, many millenials are unaware of the origin and significance behind these foods, which cause them feel that traditional food preparation is complicated and hence they lose interest in it. This is a factor that caused the low awareness of traditional Teochew culture among the younger generation.

According to Today News, Singapore National Heritage Board (NHB) stated that food is indeed an important part of culture and it represents ethnic identities. NHB has organised various events that emphasises the importance of preserving heritage and culture. For example the “Deliciously Singaporean” exhibition which happened in 2015 attracted nearly 480,000 visitors (Mendoza, 2015). This proves the point whereby public do have great interest towards preserving local culture through food.

Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth, Minister of State, Ms Sim Ann said, Singaporeans are proud of our local cuisine as these were being passed down by our ancestors. The recipe and the cooking method has been around for many years and hopefully we can preserve and pass on to the next generation. (MCCY, 2016)

Most Singaporeans do not truly know the significance and origin of Teochew traditional cuisine. In order to pass on these traditions and customs, this project would be essential as it teaches Youths about traditional Teochew culture through food.
